We spent a year here, so we did get to cover this particular area of the Pike National Forest in detail. There is basically one road into the National Forest around Monument and that is Mount Herman Road. You can take this up to Rampart Range road, which runs north south. The issue with the Pike National Forest in this area is that it is under a lot of "pressure". Meaning on the weekends it is crawling with city folks from Denver and Colorado Springs. So try to hit this particular area of forest during the week, and if you see people just get off the trail.

Summary:

• Nice enough during the week (can be crowded on weekends)

• Get off the trails and you won't see anyone.

• Lots of destruction that only city folks would make.

• Some spectacular views - particularly of the Front Range from Mount Herman and the neighboring mountains.
