One of our favorite places to go hiking. Red River is quite the little tourist town, but isn't too bad in the summer and who is going to hang around anyway. You went there to go hiking right? Head into the mountains north of town and get off the beaten path. You'll find the trails relatively uncrowded (holiday's being the exception). As always, the bigger the trail, the more folks you will run into. We usually just park the car and follow our noses. Works like a charm. Even did a little trout fishing when we were living in Santa Fe. The streams are small, cold, and fun to fish. Think we have beat these mountains into the ground.

So in summary:

  • Nice mountains. Great lazy day hiking.

  • Plenty of water - nice camping on the streams (can be a little dusty as they parallel the road).
